Charlie Key of Modulus

Charlie Key is founder of Modulus, a Cincinnati-based company that provides Node.js developers an integrated solution for hosting, scaling, and persistent data storage.

How did you start your business?

The business started slowly out of other projects. The Brandery application process really forced us to consolidate our ideas into a single vision; Modulus officially kicked off when we were accepted into the program.

How did you come up the idea for your business?

We came up with the idea while we working on a previous project, a Facebook game. When we built the application, one of the first things we had to figure out was where we were going to host it. This turned out to be particularly painful experience, which led us to create our platform.

What resources here did you take advantage of and how did they help?

Getting accepted in The Brandery has been the greatest help to us. Just being in the program has presented us with opportunities to learn from some of most knowledgeable people in the entrepreneurship world. We’ve been able to get a ton of insight into our company branding, marketing strategy and financial models.

What inspires you?

Personally, I get inspired every time I see someone using something I’ve built in the real world, especially when it’s making their life easier.

What’s next for you and your company?

At the moment, we’re really focused on building the best Node.js hosting platform available. Our long-term vision is to expand into other cloud services and continue to make the process of creating great applications as easy as possible.
